Simple Pink Ombre Cake | TheCelebrationShoppe.com

My sweet mom turned 60 this week!

My boys decorated a breakfast for her. Lots of streamers and pink… pink everywhere. She loved it. {grin}

For her cake I tried my hand at making my first ombre cake. It was a simple one, but I think it turned out pretty!

To ice a simple pink ombre cake, you’ll need:

  • Your favorite homemade buttercream icing
  • Pink gel food coloring
  • Three bowls
  • Pink rock candy
  • Optional: Wax paper

How to ice an ombre cake:

  1. Starting with a chilled two layer cake that already has a white crumb coat.
  2. Divide your icing into three bowls.
  3. Add one drop of gel food coloring to one bowl, two drops to another and three to another. Go light on the drops. It will get dark quickly.
  4. Apply your darkest icing to the bottom, about an inch tall.
  5. Apply the middle color to the middle, again, about an inch tall.
  6. Apply the lightest color to the top inch and top of cake.
  7. Crumble rock candy (if on sticks, crush inside plastic on cutting board), and sprinkle around edge of cake.

Bakers tip: Using small 3×3 pieces of wax paper, slip them under your cake on your cake plate, before icing your cake. This helps keep the cake plate clean. Just slip them out once you’re done and touch up your icing near the base if needed.

We also whipped up a quick glitter number cake topper.

You’ll need:

  • Printed numbers (just open Word, type your numbers in the point size and color you desire) on cardstock paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue (liquid is fine, but put it on your finger, not the paper, to apply)
  • Glitter
  • Lollipop stick
  • Hot glue

Easy steps:

  1. Cut out the numbers.
  2. Apply glue (with your finger if liquid, otherwise your paper will get too wet).
  3. Sprinkle on the glitter (over a sheet of paper if you want to save excess).
  4. Hot glue numbers to lollipop sticks.
